At 583 m above sea level, on a huge rocky outcrop overlooking the Val Marecchia it rises the imposing Fortress of San Leo, which is accessed via a single road literally carved into the rock. The name hyenas from San Leone who evangelized the region in the fourth century.
It was the capital of the County of Montefeltro and even the capital of Italy 962-964 behest of Berengario II. Dante Alighieri, that the appointment in the Divine Comedy, and St. Francis, who just got here as a gift from Count Orlando of Chiusi the mountain on which subsequently arose La Verna.
During the papal rule, the fortress was transformed into a prison and here were imprisoned the Count of Cagliostro, who died there, and Felice Orsini.
The pre-Romanesque church, the Lombard Romanesque Cathedral of the century. XII, the Fort and the Sacred Art Museum housed in the Palazzo Medici are unmissable monuments.
