Ravenna is the capital of mosaics, Roman city, Gothic, Byzantine, but also medieval, Venetian and ... contemporary. Unesco has declared a World Heritage Site Ravenna eight buildings.
Her beauty was an inspiration to many artists. Boccaccio set one of his finest novels, Gustav Klimt drew inspiration for his works, Hermann Hesse visited it dedicated some verses, Oscar Wilde wrote a poem entitled Ravenna.
The art of mosaics in Ravenna has found its greatest expression: here was born the Christian iconography, a mixture of symbolism and realism, of Roman and Byzantine influences.
